What makes a PICOT question useful?

It begins with a real problem

Start with a documented practice, population or evidence gap. A favorite intervention is not a problem statement.

The outcome can be assessed

Replace broad aims such as “improve care” with a rate, score, behavior, experience or clearly defined qualitative phenomenon.

The pieces agree

The question, search concepts, intervention, measures and proposed analysis should use the same population and outcome language.

Does every question need a comparison?

No. Some assignments and question types do not require an explicit comparison. When current practice is meaningful, naming it usually makes the question and evidence search clearer.

Can I use PICOT for a qualitative question?

PICOT is strongest for intervention and quantitative clinical questions. Questions about meaning or lived experience may fit PICo or another qualitative framework better. Follow the framework required by your course.
