How the college GPA calculator works

A semester GPA is a weighted average. The calculator converts each letter grade to grade points, multiplies the grade-point value by the course credits, adds the quality points and divides by the total GPA credits.

Semester GPA = total quality points ÷ total attempted GPA credits

Convert the grade

On the default scale, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and F = 0.0.

Weight by credits

A four-credit course has more influence than a one-credit course because it contributes four times as many possible quality points.

Confirm local policy

Schools can use different values for A+, repeated courses, withdrawals and academic forgiveness.

Worked calculation

Example: three courses produce a 3.30 semester GPA

A B+ in three-credit Statistics produces 9.9 quality points. An A− in three-credit English produces 11.1, and a B in four-credit Psychology produces 12.0.

(9.9 + 11.1 + 12.0) ÷ (3 + 3 + 4) = 33.0 ÷ 10 = 3.30

This is a common 4.0 plus/minus scale, not a universal institutional rule. The official registrar calculation controls.

Common calculation problems

Check these details before using the result

  • Do not average letter grades without weighting them by credits.
  • Exclude pass/fail or withdrawn courses unless the institution assigns grade points.
  • Check whether a repeated grade replaces the original or whether both attempts remain.
  • Use GPA credits rather than total earned credits when the transcript distinguishes them.
  • Do not mix undergraduate and graduate GPA rules unless the institution combines them.
  • Treat a projected grade as a scenario, not an official outcome.

How do I calculate GPA using credit hours?

Multiply each grade-point value by the course credits, add the resulting quality points and divide by total attempted GPA credits.

Can this calculate a cumulative GPA?

Yes. Select the cumulative option and enter the GPA and GPA credits already on your transcript. The result remains an estimate because institutional policies differ.

Should I include a repeated course?

Only after checking the school's repeat policy. Some institutions replace the earlier grade, while others retain both attempts in the GPA.

Does Bright Writers store my grades?

Is this an official GPA?
