Paired T Test Calculation Example and T-Test Selection

All t-tests compare an estimate with its standard error, but they use different observational units. The most important choice is whether the comparison is to a fixed value, within pairs, or between independent groups.

Answer first

Use the design to choose the t-test

A one-sample t-test compares one sample mean with a specified value. A paired t-test analyzes the mean of within-pair differences. An independent t-test compares means from two independent groups, with Welch’s version commonly preferred.

The observations that enter the standard error must be independent at the relevant level. Running an independent test on before-and-after data discards the pairing and misstates uncertainty.

A method you can reuse

Identify the unit of information before calculating t

For paired data, create one difference per pair and analyze that single column. The assumption concerns the distribution of differences, not the two original variables separately.

For independent groups, Welch’s test allows unequal variances and uses adjusted degrees of freedom. The test still requires independent units and an outcome where a mean comparison is meaningful.

01

Write the comparison in words

Specify one mean versus a value, one mean difference within pairs, or a difference between two group means.

02

Identify the independent unit

A person, classroom, clinic, matched pair, or cluster may be the unit that carries independent information.

03

Calculate estimate and standard error

Use the sample SD for one-sample, SD of differences for paired, or group SDs and sizes for Welch.

04

Calculate t and degrees of freedom

Divide the estimate minus its null value by the standard error. Use the df formula for the selected test.

05

Report the effect and interval

Include means or mean differences, SDs, confidence interval, t, df, p, effect size, and design limits.

Worked from start to finish

Paired t test calculation example

Five fictional students complete a quiz before and after a review. Their improvements are 2, 4, 3, 5, and 1 points.

Differences d: 2, 4, 3, 5, 1
Mean difference d̄ = 3
Squared deviations from 3: 1, 1, 0, 4, 4
Sum = 10
SD of differences = √[10 / (5 – 1)] = 1.581
SE = 1.581 / √5 = 0.707
Null mean difference = 0
t = 3 / 0.707 = 4.243
df = 5 – 1 = 4
Result: The paired test gives t(4) = 4.24 for a mean improvement of 3 points in this tiny fictional sample.

The effect estimate is the three-point mean within-student change. The test does not compare the post mean with the pre mean as independent groups.

With only five pairs, distribution shape and unusual differences matter greatly. The example is for arithmetic practice, not a reliable intervention conclusion.

Which t-test matches which design?

The unit and standard error change across the three procedures.

Test Question Data analyzed
One-sample t-test Is one population mean different from a specified value? One value per independent unit
Paired t-test Is the mean within-pair difference different from zero? One difference per pair
Welch independent t-test Do two independent population means differ? Two independent groups with separate variances

A pre-post change does not by itself prove that an intervention caused the change. History, maturation, testing, regression to the mean, and missing follow-up can create alternatives. A control group and design reasoning matter.

If a few extreme differences dominate a paired analysis, inspect data quality and the scientific context. A transformation, robust method, or signed-rank method may be considered when its estimand matches the question.

What students report

Real student experiences, with context

These public comments are personal experiences, not universal outcomes. They are included because they show where students commonly get stuck and how the method above helps.

“the question you’re trying to answer is central”

Student discussion in r/statistics

Variable types matter, but the estimand and study design come first. The same columns can support different tests when the research question changes.

“So now I’m just terribly confused.”

Student discussion in r/statistics

Confidence interval errors often come from mixing a population size with a sample size, or using the wrong standard error. Write the estimand and formula before inserting numbers.

Failure-mode review

Common problems and how to repair them

Using independent t-test for repeated measurements

Create within-unit differences and use a paired analysis, or a model that represents all repeated observations.

Testing normality of pre and post separately

For paired t inference, assess the distribution and outliers of the differences.

Assuming equal variance by default

Welch’s independent t-test avoids that equality assumption and is often a sound default.

Reporting significance without the mean difference

Include the estimate, interval, group or paired summaries, units, and practical interpretation.

Before you submit or move on

A practical final check

  • The one-sample, paired, or independent design is correct.
  • The independent unit is identified.
  • Pairing is preserved where applicable.
  • Outliers and distribution of relevant values are inspected.
  • Estimate, SE, t, and df are independently checked.
  • Confidence interval and effect size are reported.
  • Design limitations are separated from test results.
Important: T-tests are mean-based procedures. They may not fit severe outliers, bounded scales, complex dependence, clusters, repeated time points, informative missingness, or a different target quantity.

Questions students ask

Frequently asked questions

When should I use a paired t-test?

Use it when measurements are naturally paired, such as before and after on the same person or matched units, and analyze the within-pair differences.

What is the paired t-test formula?

t equals the mean difference minus the null difference, divided by the standard deviation of differences over the square root of the number of pairs.

What is the difference between paired and independent t-tests?

Paired tests use within-pair differences. Independent tests compare means from separate independent groups.

Should I use Student’s or Welch’s independent t-test?

Welch’s test does not require equal variances and is commonly preferred unless a justified model specifies otherwise.

What should I report for a t-test?

Report n, means or mean difference, SD, confidence interval, t, df, p-value, effect size, and design context.
