Generating Research Questions: Importance and Feasibility
A strong research question sits where importance and feasibility overlap. It addresses a consequential uncertainty with a population, construct, evidence source, method, and scope that the project can actually support.
Answer first
Start with a decision-relevant problem, then narrow through evidence and constraints
Describe the problem, who is affected, what is uncertain, and why the answer would change knowledge, policy, practice, design, or future research.
Then test data or participant access, measurement, ethics, approvals, time, skill, resources, sample, analysis, and contribution. A question that cannot be answered with the available design needs revision before a proposal is written.

Importance is not the same as broadness. A narrow question can matter when it resolves a specific decision or contradiction. Feasibility is not the same as convenience. The method must still generate credible evidence.

Write the practical or theoretical problem

Map what is already known

Claim boundary: Association in one self-reported cross-sectional sample, not causal effect on academic performance
The setting improves feasibility but narrows transferability. Self-report reduces measurement burden but introduces recall and reporting limitations.
If academic performance is the real outcome, the student needs authorized record access or another defensible measure. Changing the outcome merely for convenience may no longer answer the original problem.

A question should pass every column before the proposal is expanded.

Avoid placing the preferred method in charge of the question. “I want to use regression” is not a research problem. Choose analysis only after the estimand, variables, and design are clear.
A gap statement should cite evidence. Phrases such as “few studies exist” require a transparent search, while “no studies exist” is difficult to defend without a systematic process.
